The road twists up from Brixen until the air turns thin and sharp at 1,800 metres. You step out of the car and the silence is physical. It presses against your ears. This was once a sanatorium for the Habsburgs and the obsession with clean lungs remains. The architecture is severe. Three timber towers mimic the spruce trees outside and are stripped of any ornamentation that might compete with the Geisler peaks. Interiors rely on raw dolomite stone and untreated wood. It feels less like a hotel and more like a minimalist observatory. The tap water is pure Plose spring water. It is likely better than the wine.
